Nothing makes Valentine’s Day more special than baking something sweet for the one you love.
My boyfriend loves this cake. And the truth is he doesn’t know that I cheat and use a basic yellow cake mix to start off this super sweet cake. ( I honestly am not a cook or a talented baker therefore I take short cuts wherever I can.)
So here’s my version of the Tres Leches ( 3 Milk) Cake.
Ingredients:
1 basic yellow or white cake mix box
7 ounces of sweetened condensed milk (app. ½ a can)
1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup of milk
6 ounces of evaporated milk (app. ½ a can)
1 toothpick
Topping:
Fresh sliced strawberries (or a defrosted can of strawberries)
Whipped cream
1. Bake cake mix according to box and let cool for at least 1 hour.
2. Mix together in a bowl sweetened condensed milk, heavy whipping cream, milk, and evaporated milk. This becomes the milk mixture.
3. Use a butter knife to softly scrap off and discard the golden top of the cake.
4. Use the toothpick to poke several deep holes all over the cake. (At least every 1/2 inch.)
5. Slowly pour half of the milk mixture all over the cake. Allow the cake to absorb the milk mixture.
6. Refrigerate cake and the left over milk mixture for at least 4 hours.
7. Take cake and milk mixture out of the refrigator and pour the rest of the milk mixture onto the cake.
8. Once absorbed add whipped cream onto cake.
9. Top cake off with slices of strawberries. Enjoy!
- This cake can be refrigerated up to 12 hours as in Step 6.
- If you prefer a less wet cake, use less of the milk mixture. (Leftover milk mixture tastes great in coffee.)
- If you slice strawberries from top to bottom, you’ll end up with heart shaped slices. A perfect touch for Valentine’s Day. (See my pic. of the cake.)
