The best feedback on a gift I gave, was a photo album/ scrapbook I made for my nephew when he turned eighteen and went off to college.  I included a handful of pictures he colored, pictures of his ancestors, his childhood sweetheart, crayon scrawlings of his learning to spell his name, and a section for him to add to.  The book only cost ten dollars, but the memories will last a lifetime.
