Host creative competitions
Photo contests and story competitions, with themes that synch with your cause, work well to establish an online community for your organization. Competitions get people more involved in your online presence than a web site or a newsletter describing volunteer opportunities alone. They are easy to run and easy to enter, thus generating a lot of buzz among the community.
Solicit ideas for your organization
This is like asking a community super brain for ideas. These contests generally have fewer entries, but more committed involvement. Similar to the American Express Members Project, this type of contest can involve users submitting ideas for fundraising or volunteer opportunities.
Understand how ideas are perceived by the community
You can use this information to target and solicit help from potential volunteers. This couples nicely with objective number 2. Unlike the simple 1-5 star rating system, we can target rating criteria so that the data collected is more effective for you. As users judge entries, you are essentially conducting a survey.
An example would be to solicit ideas to inspire potential volunteers to come to a volunteer training orientation for your organization. Example criteria could be something like the following.
- "Likeliness this idea would motivate me to learn more about the organization’s cause (40%)"
- "This idea is easy and cost effective to implement (30%)"
- "This idea inspires me to volunteer for the organization (30%)"
